Earthjustice is now accepting applications for an Associate Attorney position in its Washington, D.C. office.

The Washington, D.C. office serves both as a regional office for issues arising in Mid-Atlantic States, and as a center for litigation on important national environmental issues. Our Vice President of Litigation for Healthy Communities is based here. The Washington office’s docket currently includes litigation and administrative advocacy to protect public health and the environment from air pollution, including in disproportionately impacted communities; curb greenhouse gas emissions; promote clean energy and energy efficiency; prevent degradation of streams, wetlands, and other waters; and challenge the practice of mountaintop removal mining in the Appalachian Region. RESPONSIBILITIES

The Associate Attorney will generally work collaboratively with senior Earthjustice attorneys, but is expected to work more independently over time. Associate Attorneys at Earthjustice perform a range of litigation-related tasks that can include:
  • Drafting motions, briefs, and other pleadings.
  • Attending client and expert meetings.
  • Investigating facts and assisting with case development.
  • Interacting with clients and working with experts.
  • Engaging in advocacy before administrative agencies.
  • Participating in court hearings.
  • Screening and developing potential new cases.

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants must be law school graduates who are admitted to or will apply for admission to the District of Columbia bar. Additional qualifications include:
  • One to five years of litigation or other relevant experience post-law school.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and analytical skills.
  • Strong self-motivation, initiative, and creative thinking.
  • An ability and willingness to work collegially with others.
  • A commitment to public interest work, and a strong interest in promoting. environmental and public health protection.

The Associate Program is designed to help young attorneys develop into thoughtful, professional, and effective advocates skilled in the various aspects of public-interest litigation. The program also affords Associate Attorneys the opportunity to work with and be mentored by some of the best environmental litigators in the country. A number of associates have gone on to other positions within Earthjustice or with other public interest organizations. The term for this position is two years, with a possible extension for a third year.
