General position overview:
This position will involve using applicable laws, including the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, Administrative Procedures Act and others to protect amphibian and reptile species from the many threats they face. This will require a dynamic, dedicated individual with a background in law, advocacy and biology.  
Main duties:
  • Expand the Center’s amphibian and reptile conservation work.
  • Identify and carry out opportunities to protect imperiled amphibians and reptiles from urban sprawl, pollution, logging, livestock grazing and other threats through litigation.
  • Prepare petitions to list amphibians and reptiles under the Endangered Species Act.
  • Develop detailed knowledge of the status of North American amphibians and reptiles.
  • Build relationships with key scientists studying amphibians and reptiles.
  • Utilize litigation and media campaigns to highlight the threats to imperiled amphibians and reptiles.
  • Advocate for comprehensive protection of amphibians and reptiles as a response to litigation and other pressure.
Essential qualities, qualifications and skills desired:
  • At least two years experience as an environmental attorney.
  • Experience litigating under the Endangered Species Act.
  • Knowledge of the status, biology of, and threats to North American amphibians and reptiles.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Background in leading litigation projects and working collaboratively with peers.
  • Dynamic and assertive personality.

UCLA School of Law’s Emmett/Frankel Fellowship in Environmental Law and Policy
UCLA School of Law’s Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment is now accepting applications for the UCLA Emmett/Frankel Fellowship in Environmental Law and Policy for the academic years 2015-2017. This fellowship is a full-time, two-year faculty position beginning in the summer of 2015. The position involves policy and legal research and writing, assisting with projects such as conferences and workshops, and teaching. 

The Emmett Institute on Climate Change and the Environment is dedicated to creating and advancing law and policy solutions to climate change and other environmental challenges, and to training the next generation of leaders to address these issues. The program fosters informed debate and analysis to educate the public, policymakers, business leaders, and others on critical environmental issues. 

The Fellow will work on issues relating to environmental law and policy, including climate change, and will generate policy-oriented publications and other products for the Institute, in collaboration with UCLA Law faculty. The Fellow will also assist the Institute’s Executive Directors with projects relating to the Institute’s work, including organizing conferences, workshops, public education and outreach efforts, and other events. In addition to these responsibilities, which will continue year-round, the Fellow will take on teaching responsibilities in environmental law topics. 

Candidates should possess a J.D. (or equivalent law degree), earned within the past several years or expected in the spring of 2015; a strong academic record; excellent analytical and writing skills; and demonstrated interest and background in environmental law or policy. Previous experience in law practice or clinical instruction is preferred but not necessary. The salary is anticipated to be approximately $66,000 per year plus a competitive benefits package.

The Environmental Justice Coalition for Water (EJCW) is a statewide coalition of grassroots groups and intermediary organizations building a collective, community-based movement for democratic water allocation, management, and policy development in California. EJCW empowers low-income and people of color communities throughout California to advocate for access to clean, safe, and affordable water.
The Coalition Director position
EJCW seeks highly qualified applicants with demonstrated commitment to environmental justice to fill a Sacramento-based position. The Coalition Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Executive Director and in close partnership with and in support of EJCW staff, member organizations and allies, and Board of Directors.
The Coalition Coordinator is responsible for the development, coordination, and implementation of EJCW's programs and advocacy campaigns, including Human Right to Water (AB 685) implementation; pollution prevention; democratic water governance; Climate adaptation; and more.
Major job responsibilities:
  • Policy: Develop, coordinate, and implement EJCW's policy agenda through an inclusive process with staff, member organizations, and Board
  • Multi-forum advocacy: Develop, coordinate, and implement advocacy campaigns to advance EJCW's agenda using multiple strategies, including legislative and administrative advocacy, coalition-building, community organizing and mobilization, capacity-building, research, data analysis and writing, and social and conventional media outreach

Qualifications/Skills/Knowledge:

As an Attorney-Advisor with the Department of the Interior, Office of the Solicitor, Pacific Northwest Region, Portland Regional Office, located in Portland, OR your specific duties will include: 
Providing legal counsel and representation for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the Department of the Interior. They should have an interest in working as part of a team tackling complex Indian law issues in which more senior attorneys will be delegating parts of larger projects to this attorney. They would provide legal advice and written opinions on a range of Indian law matters including matters relating to taking land into trust. This attorney individually, or as part of a team, will investigate claims and draft litigation reports and provide other legal assistance to the Department of Justice. They will be expected to assist in large scale document reviews necessary to support litigation. They will also research and build strong factual records that support complex legal theories underlying high priority affirmative litigation in development on behalf of the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). This attorney may also be engaged in supporting document intensive discovery processes associated with litigation involving the BIA and potentially hundreds of parties.
