Fellowship: Conservation Law Center Fellow (Bloomington, Indiana, deadline: July 5, 2016)

Conservation Law Fellow for 2016-17
Conservation Law Center

The CLC: The Conservation Law Center (CLC) is an independent, non-profit organization that provides legal counsel to conservation organizations and works to improve conservation law and policy.  The CLC also operates a Conservation Law Clinic for the Indiana University Maurer School of Law, and maintains close relationships with the law school community. The CLC handles a wide range of transactional, regulatory, and litigation matters for clients. But it is best known for its expertise on law of conservation easements and comprehensive counsel to land trusts; for its legal work on threats to species and natural processes; and for its legal support for the conservation of freshwater systems of high natural value (including Lake Michigan public trust litigation). You can find more information about the CLC at: http://www.conservationlawcenter.org. The CLC is housed in the same building as the other Maurer law clinics, across the street from the law school in downtown Bloomington, Indiana.
The Position: The CLC employs Conservation Law Fellows to assist in its conservation law practice. The practice includes litigation, conservation transactions, the preparation of comments on proposed agency actions and rules, research, and analysis of legislation. Fellows also assist as needed in all aspects of the operation of the CLC.  Conservation Law Fellowships begin with a one year term, with a second year possible at the option of the Fellow, depending on interest, and the CLC, depending on performance.  The CLC executive director, W. William Weeks, supervises Fellows, but they are expected to assume substantial responsibility for their own work.  A Conservation Law Fellow works closely with the CLC staff attorney, one other Law Fellow, students and administrative staff.
Qualifications: Fellowships are generally offered to graduating law students or recent law school graduates with outstanding legal credentials who are committed to conservation. Strong candidates have excellent legal research, writing and analytical skills. We expect Fellows to be licensed to practice law within several months of their employment by the Center.
Salary: The annual salary for the first year Fellows is $39,000, plus benefits.  An increase is possible for second year Fellows. Conservation Law Fellows work an average of 35 hours per week, although representation of clients requires that Fellows work more than that during some weeks.

Application Procedure:  Applicants should send a cover letter, a resume, a writing sample of no more than 2 pages, and references to The Conservation Law Center at 116 South Indiana, Suite 4, Bloomington, IN 47408, or respond by e-mail to sfaught@indiana.edu. Applications received by July 5, 2016 will receive full consideration.
